Texas is known for its size and its wide open spaces, but it isn’t always easy for hunters there to find a place to hunt. Most Texas hunters face three options: hunt on public land, use the services of a guide or outfitter, or like Blake Byram, join a hunting club. Most hunters in Texas either belong to a lease/club or hunt through a guide/outfitter.

Approximately ninety-seven percent of Texas land is privately owned, and the state’s landowners long ago learned that hunters are willing to pay for access to tracts with good game populations. Studies show that about eighty-five percent of the state’s more than one million hunters pursue the activity on private property.

Only forty-three years old, Blake Byram has already had a lifetime of adventure. He has been a licensed pilot since 1992, and as such has donated his piloting skills and personal aircraft to many worthy missions. He has flown medical supplies and doctors to Haiti for the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders. He has flown search and rescue missions after Hurricane Katrina and flooding in his hometown of Austin. And he has donated helicopter time and instruction to the Bridgepoint Elementary school in the Eanes Independent School District for their Science Day in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
